KR-2 PRE-MOLDED WING SKINS
|
|
The KR wing skins are vacuum bag molded to insure a good bond between the inner and outer skins and the Polyurethane foam core. The core is made with "Lasto-A-Foam" which is used in many aircraft, automotive and marine applications. This core is ¼" thick. The facings (inner and outer skin) are one ply each of 6 oz. 7533 bi-directional cloth. The warp fibers (the ones running spanwise) on the outside facing parallels the leading edge; while the inside facing is applied with the warp fibers paralleling the trailing edge. This "cross plying" gives good torsional as well as "rip stop" strength. The skins are "beefed up" in the areas where the two spars are attached with one extra ply of glass. Because of the inherent strength and stiffness built into the skins, it is not necessary to add more length to the spars. These wing skins will work well on the KR-2S.
| The skins are slightly
longer than the stock wing. The 23 ft. 6 in. span will increase the climb
rate and will provide better performance on the KR, especially the heavier
ones at 600 lbs. or more. Slight modification of the main outer spar is
required. We recommend you follow the spar building techniques provided
from us when you build your outer main spar. The wing is slightly more
tapered than the stock wing. The plyfoam web supplied in the kit is quite
acceptable as a wing extension.
A sheet of "plyfoam" is supplied with the skins and all the ribs are stenciled on it. Simply cut out the ribs and glue them in place. Foam ribs are not used and complete "foaming" of the wing is not done. The only parts required from the Rand kit are the spars and the attach fittings. |
The skins are made in female molds which leave a mirror slick finish on them. To paint the skins requires only sanding and 180 grit to give the primer some "teeth" to stick to. Two people and one good weekend should enable you to finish a wing. Price of the wing skins is $1,800. Crating charge is $50. We offer a construction video tape for $30. It contains building instructions and tips. You can save approximately $20 on the freight charges if you have the shipment held at the freight terminal for your pick up as opposed to having the freight company deliver to a residential address.
