Pictures of the Week March 1, 2003
Here are some photos of the cowl seals. I made them with a 15 inch wide piece of fiberglass cloth folded in thirds. I started by covering the middle third with clear GE silicon II. Then I folded down the top third over the middle third and again covered it with clear GE silicon II. Next I folded the bottom third over the middle third and again applied clear GE silicon II. I used aluminum foil to cover the workbench but it was a little difficult to remove. I think next time I'll use some 4mm plastic sheet. The plastic will be much easier to remove after the silicone cures. The final step was to put a line down the center of the piece and cut it into 2 1/2" strips.
Next item was to make a plug to flow cooling air into the top of the oil cooler. It was cut from a block of foam that was packing material for something that I got. I used the top of a 3M 777 spray can to form the tube end to fit the 2 1/2" flex hose. I got a little too aggressive in cutting the foam so I added some two part foam to fix the bottom front side. The other end of the flex duct will be connected to the aft engine baffle near the top center of the engine with the pictured aluminum flange.
