Pictures of the Week October 20, 2002
The progress this week was manufacture of an air-oil separator for the engine breather line. The turbo charger and the long duration requirement for N52BL made it necessary to consider oil consumption as a critical issue for the engine. To minimize the amount of oil lost through the crank case breather I constructed an air-oil separator. I began with a piece of 3 1/2" 6061 aluminum tubing that I had left over from another project. I constructed a bottom plate and top rim from .080 6061 and welded them on. The fittings were chosen from what was on hand. The design is shown on the engine documentation page.
To complete this component I need to find some coarse stainless steel wool to use as an condensation trap for the oil and place it in the center chamber.
